How do I go about getting a domestic violence protection order?

If there’s an incident at your home or work and the police are called then sometimes the police will institute the domestic violence protection order application.

If police aren’t involved then you can fill out an application for protection by going to your lawyer’s office or local Magistrate’s Court. Sometimes you may be able to obtain a temporary protection order until the matter comes up for hearing in front of the Magistrate.

Domestic violence covers assaults and injury as well as damage to property but it can also cover things like intimidation, harassment or behavior by one partner against the other.

It includes anything deliberate and willful but also includes the threat of an injury or damage to property, stalking and even indecent behaviour by one partner against the other.

One of the things that the application for protection needs to establish is that the act of domestic violence that your complaining about is likely to occur again.
